Math Olympiads

Before School Program for Grades 4-6

(Coached practices & contests - no fee)

Students in Grades 4-6 are invited to practice their problem-solving skills and to compete as a member of the CHS team against mathletes worldwide. This distinguished program offers challenging and thought-provoking word problems that stretch students’ math abilities. Math Olympiads’ stated goals for students are:

  • To stimulate enthusiasm and a love for mathematics
  • To introduce important mathematical concepts
  • To teach major strategies and develop mathematical flexibility for problem solving
  • To strengthen mathematical intuition
  • To foster mathematical creativity and ingenuity
  • To provide the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of participating as a team member

The coaches of the CHS team are Mr. Acosta, Mr. Gallegos and Ms. Giordano. There is approximately one practice and one contest each month starting in late October through March (see schedule below). Meetings take place from 7:25-8:00 a.m. in the CMR. All five contests are timed and consist of five non-routine word problems. There is no fee for this program.

Contests are scored by the coaches and reported to the Math Olympiads administrators. Scores are not shared publicly and performance is not reported on school progress reports.
