Third graders completed their work on their 2 motor, 2 wheel plus pivoting wheel "Bots", and demonstrated the performance goals accomplished by each partnership, including: programmed to go forward & backward, right and left, stop at 1 meter, and stop when sound sensor senses a louder sound (clap). This is a difficult construction challenge, and we were very proud of the many different ways our budding engineers attached motors and wheels, including upside down!

Beginners this week in preparation for the Thanksgiving Holiday, created Callie (named by Beginners) the Turkey. Each student wrote what he or she was thankful for on a feather. Those feathers were then used to decorate Callie.

Grade Four students travelled via the T to the Apple Store on Boylston St. to learn how to edit a simple video using iMovie. Students learned how to create a new project, capture footage, create titles, add effects, and export. Students will apply these skills in developing an iMovie presenting their research related to a unit on Medieval and Renaissance history.

Last week CHS hosted six visitors from the Vikurskoli Elementary School located in Iceland. Sponsored by Icelandic teacher’s union, our guests traveled to Boston as a part of a larger group of 55 teachers and administrators that were interested in studying best practices in elementary education. The group identified CHS by researching elementary schools that appeared to value creativity and utilized an Orff based music program that closely matched their own. In addition to CHS, group members visited the John F. Kennedy and Buckingham, Browne & Nichols schools.

Update: power has been restored and the school will be open on Monday October 31. As of 10am Sunday October 30, there is no power at The Chestnut Hill School. We have been in contact with NSTAR, and we are hopeful that the power will be restored by the evening. If so, school can safely be held on Monday. If the power has not been restored by this evening, we will need to cancel school on Monday. We will be in contact this evening should the need arise to cancel school on Monday. You can check the website at www.tchs.org for any updates on the situation.

In the true spirit of community, we are thrilled to have adults from every aspect of the school serving as advisors this year. We discussed the goals of the advisor program as a group over a pizza lunch. Then each advisor-advisee paired off to share highlights of the summer and thoughts about the upcoming academic year.

We are thrilled to announce an exciting shift in our math curriculum next year to Math in Focus: The Singapore Approach. After a yearlong faculty review, we believe this new program will strengthen our ability to meet the needs of our students and to build both their skill and confidence as math learners. Per the program's design, Math in Focus will be fully implemented in Kindergarten - Grade 6; Beginners and Pre-Kindergarten will draw upon Singapore strategies but will continue to use multiple resources to support early numeracy skills.

The second grade students shared their inventions at the annual CHS science fair. Inventions included a walking mop, a teeth cleaning mouth guard, an umbrella shovel, an edible eraser and a night-time puppy walker. Each student had the opportunity to explain to their classmates how their invention solves a problem and how it is used. The inventions were just one of several science related projects displayed at this year's science fair.
