The Chestnut Hill School will be offering Saturday classes for students in pre-school through sixth grade. The classes will run for five consecutive Saturdays beginning Saturday April 19, and ending May 17 (4/19, 4/26, 5/3, 5/10, 5/17). Classes will be offered from 9:30-10:30 and from 10:30-11:30; some classes are two-hours and will run from 9:30-11:30. Our Spring Saturday Programs are open to all students/campers currently enrolled at CHS and CHSCASP.
A • Drama Workshop (Grades 1-3) 9:30-11:30 inst: Sara Barton
Students will collaborate and create their own production of a familiar folk or fairytale. Each week there will be a different emphasis on the many facets of theatre, including: play writing, acting, costumes, set design, and lighting. At the conclusion of the five weeks there will be a performance to showcase all of their hard work for families and friends. Because of the nature of the process it is very important that students attend every rehearsal.
Instructor Bio: After receiving my degree in theatre education and acting from Emerson College, I began working in The Chestnut Hill School community. I have been teaching after school here for two years, and I am excited to be entering my third summer as the upper camp drama director. It was a Saturday program similar to this one that sparked my own love of theater, and so I'm thrilled to share this experience with the students!
B • Movie Making (Grades 4-6) 9:30-11:30 inst: Mike Delatizky

Come along and learn the technique of papier-mache. You will be designing and constructing large-scale 3D papier-mache pieces. How about making your favorite animal or food ......giant size! We'll be taking some of our inspiration from the work of sculptor Claes Oldenburg. G-1 • Chess (Grades 4-6) 9:30-10:30 inst: Maryanne Reilly
G-2 • Chess (Grades 1-3) 10-30-11:30 inst: Maryanne Reilly
I begin, by teaching my students algebraic notation; i.e., how to read and write chess games. This not only helps them develop a familiarity with the board, but also enables them to record their own games in relatively short order. I will cover basic rules: how the pieces move, castling, development, opening principles; and then move on to pattern recognition, strategy, and tactics. I will use examples from (short) famous chess games until such time as I can use examples from the students' own games. I do assure students that I am not interested in whether they win or lose their games, only that they learn from them.
Instructor Bio: Maryanne Reilly has been teaching scholastic chess for twelve years, in both public and private school settings. She has served on the board of Directors of the Massachusetts Chess Association for several years, serving as Scholastic Coordinator twice. Maryanne was elected President of MACA last spring. Her students have competed in State and National Championships, where they have placed. She also teaches students who are interested in playing more casual chess, though she recommends and organizes field trips to local chess tournaments.
