Named Funds

Named Funds at CHS

On occasion, CHS will accept gifts given by a donor for a specific purpose set forth in writing by the donor. The Chestnut Hill School welcomes gifts of all sizes to the following named funds:

Gregory Blackburn Fund for Music

A RESTRICTED FUND

Dr. Blackburn served as the Head of School from the fall of 2000 through the spring of 2007. During his tenure, the music program at CHS flourished. From playing the piano at one of the class performances to directing the sixth grade musical, Dr. Blackburn brought music into our community. To honor him and the music school he helped to establish, this fund provides scholarship aid to CHS students to attend the Chestnut Hill School for Music.

Susan A. Flake Memorial Scholarship Fund

A RESTRICTED FUND

Sue Flake was dedicated to The Chestnut Hill School where she served as a parent, teacher, tutor, school nurse, and even acting Head of School. In the 1950s, Mrs. Flake began training at Children’s Hospital to teach children with learning disabilities, especially dyslexia. She brought this expertise with her to CHS where she worked tirelessly with dyslexic children. In her honor, her family has established the fund for the purpose of contributing to the cost of learning assessments and evaluations for children of families receiving financial aid at CHS.

Schreiber Family Fund

A RESTRICTED FUND

In 1991, the school community was shaken by the loss of the Schreiber Family (Donald, Merle, Jason-age 15 and Justin-age 4) in a tragic airplane accident. Mrs. Schreiber was the chair-elect of the Board of Trustees and her sons attended CHS. In their memory, the annual Schreiber Award was initiated to honor the 6th grade student who has shown generosity of spirit in service to the school and/or the community. The fund supports scholarship aid and, at times, serves as an emergency financial aid fund for families.

Karan A. Merry Endowment

AN ENDOWED FUND

Karan A. Merry served as Head of School from 1981-1996. Her tenure brought a focus on multiculturalism. The position of multicultural coordinator was instituted and the Multicultural Forum began, bringing families, faculty, and administrators together to address issues of multiculturalism and diversity. This fund was established in Mrs. Merry’s honor to carry on the multicultural work at CHS.

Susan C. Bryant Educational Fund

AN ENDOWED FUND

This fund is named for Sue Bryant, who served as Head of School from 1996 to 1999. Mrs. Bryant is known for her implementation of the split-classroom model, which remains today. In her honor, our faculty and staff are awarded stipends for enrichment and professional development.
